What Will You Study?

There are 3 mandatory units in the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement. These are:

Unit 1 - Understanding Principles and Practices of Assessment’

Unit 1 is knowledge-based/theory. It covers all of the theory behind the role and responsibilities of an assessor. The unit is assignment-based, and some of the topics covered include: –

  • Assessment types and methods
  • Use of technology
  • The training cycle

You will be required to complete a series of eight written assignments that are submitted to your tutor for assessment.

Unit 2 - Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment

You will conduct an assessment on two learners, to assess their occupational competence using a variety of assessment methods.  The assessment will be carried out in the learners’ workplace.

You will need to arrange access to two learners and a suitably qualified assessor, who is willing to observe you.  You can carry out this assessment, at a time convenient to you and your learners. Your tutor will attend to assess your practice.

Unit 3 - Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding

You will have a further opportunity to assess two learners. However, for this unit, you will be assessing the candidate’s knowledge and understanding concerning specific qualification criteria.

The main task within this unit is looking at the ‘knowledge-based criteria learners need to meet and developing assessment plans.  You will ask your learners to produce work that meets the respective criteria from their qualifications.  You will then be tasked with marking the work, providing learner feedback and making an assessment decision.
