This DET course is designed for those who wish to explore underpinning theories, frameworks and research into effective teaching and learning practices while developing their practical teaching skills.
If you are already working and seeking career progression, or want to work as a teacher in the further education and skills sector teaching adults who are over 16 years old, this DET course will be ideal to reach your goals.
Please note: those that are registered for the DET after 01/09/24 will not be able to use the qualification to apply for QTLS status. Those who wish to pursue QTLS will need to complete the new L5 Diploma in Teaching due to be released at the end of 2024.
Entry requirements
in detail:
- Demonstrate skills in English & Math at Level 2
- Good reading and writing skills in English
- Be qualified or experienced in the subject you intend to teach
- All L5 DET course students must be able to meet the requirement for 100 hours of teaching practice (any teaching completed in the past 12 months can be taken into consideration).
- You must be working or teaching as a volunteer – you will be observed in your workplace environment by one of your suitably qualified colleagues.
How will i be assessed?
- Eight observations of your teaching. These observations are normally completed by another teacher acting as an expert witness.
- 100 hours of classroom teaching experience. A teaching hours log will be required.
- Assignments for each of the nine units in this qualification. The assignments range from 2000 to 4000 words and some also require product evidence such as lesson plans, teaching resources and other associated paperwork.
- Personal statements and a log of your continued personal development.

Course content
DET teaching qualification
Four mandatory units:
- Teaching Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
- Developing Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training
- Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training
- Wider Professional Practice
Five pre-selected optional units:
- Developing and Preparing Resources for Education and Training
- Developing, Using and Organising Resources in a Specialist Area
- Equality and Diversity
- Preparing for the Personal Tutoring Role
- Teaching in a Specialist Area

How long will it take?
The guided learning hours for this course are 360. We recommend an allocation of 6-8 hours of study per week. Based on this, the course should take you on average 12 months with DET online courses.
As the det course assignments are online, you can study completely at your own pace. There are no deadlines on course completion, and you will have a personal tutor available whenever you need support.
Prefer to study
face-to-face?
We also offer the same course and qualification with a Tutor group.
If you prefer to study with others, face-to-face with a tutor, and require additional structure to your learning commitment, our Cohort version of the Level 5 DET might be ideal for you.
You and your group will begin together on the same day and work to an assessment schedule that lasts 11 months.
You will have unit assignment hand-in dates every 5- 7 weeks.

Yes. Once you’ve completed the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (L5 DIT) and received your certificate, you’ll be eligible to apply for QTLS status through the Society for Education and Training (SET).

Yes, you can enrol and begin working through the course content without a teaching placement. However, we strongly recommend that you secure a teaching or training role early in your studies, as you’ll need to complete 250 hours of teaching practice and be observed in your setting.
Starting your placement sooner rather than later will help you apply what you’re learning in real time and stay on track with the practical requirements of the course.
