The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET course) is a nationally recognised teaching qualification designed for individuals looking to start teaching in the Further Education and skills sector.
This AET qualification provides a practical introduction to teaching adults, helping you understand how to plan, deliver, and assess effective learning sessions. It is ideal for those new to teaching as well as those already delivering training in the workplace.
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training was previously known as PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector), so you may still see it referred to by this name.

Fast track – Designed for learners who want to complete their Level 3 AET course more quickly, this option allows you to progress at an accelerated pace. You will receive structured guidance, faster feedback on your assignments, and ongoing support to help you complete your teaching qualification efficiently.

This aet course is designed for both the private training industry and post 16 educational institutes; the course covers the generic teaching skills required to become an effective teacher/trainer.
Not currently teaching but planning to start?
This course is ideal if you are new to teaching and want to gain the knowledge and confidence to begin delivering training. Many learners progress onto further teaching qualifications such as the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or Level 5 Diploma in Teaching.
Already teaching but don’t have a recognised qualification?
This AET qualification is perfect for those already delivering training or working in a teaching role who want to gain a nationally recognised teaching qualification to support their career development.
How will i be assessed?
Assessment is through both assignment coursework and practical assessment.
You will perform a Micro Teach session, fully supported by your tutor throughout the planning and delivery of this process. You will draw up a lesson plan and use Zoom/Skype or similar to demonstrate a 15-minute teaching session. You will also participate in the evaluation process of other micro-teaching sessions.

Course content
AET teaching qualification
The units will explore the key principles of teaching, and you will gain an understanding of:
- The roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
- How to use inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training
- The principles and practices of assessment
- Each unit contains written assignment questions, which will become part of your portfolio.
How long will it take?
The course usually fits around your existing commitments. The guided learning hours for this AET course are 48 hours, with most learners completing their Level 3 teaching qualification within a few months.
You can study at your own pace, making it suitable for those balancing work, family, or other responsibilities.

Focus Awards
Yes, the L3 AET is an Ofqual Regulated Qualification (RQF), fully recognised and accredited course.
This is a UK based qualification, however we have learners completing this course from many different countries. UK qualifications are sought-after internationally.
Certificate processing times can vary. We allow up to 3 weeks, however, certificates often arrive sooner than this. Future Step can provide a letter confirming completion in the meantime if required.
Yes, you will receive both a digital and hard copy of your certificate.
This course has 14 assignments of which 13 are theory based. There is no official word count but on average you can expect to have to complete approximately 3000 words across the 13 assignments.
Yes. You will be required to perform a 15-minute teaching session to complete this course. You will need to source a minimum of two learners for this session who are aged 16+. You will also need to record and send your teaching session to your tutor for assessment. Your tutor will work with you to ensure you are fully prepared to deliver your practical assessment.
Learners must be 19 years of age and have access to a minimum of two learners for the practical assessment.
