What is the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training?

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a requirement for anyone looking to work in a teaching role in an Ofqual regulated learning institute.

It is a nationally recognised qualification that allows you to progress to the Level 5 Diploma in Education & Training, bringing you closer to becoming a Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS).

Who’s it for?

The course is designed for people teaching in both the private training industry and in educational institutes.  It is ideal if you work or want to work as a teacher or trainer in the Further Education and Skills Sector, for example: –

  • Learners who have just started a teaching/training role
  • Teachers/trainers who are seeking career progression in their area of work
  • Those working with learners on a one-to-one basis
  • Learners who teach in the industry already
  • Learners who have already achieved some Education and Training units that can be counted in this qualification as recognition of prior learning (RPL)
  • Assessors who wish to achieve a teaching/training qualification

What time commitment is required?

The guided learning hours for this course are 140 – 204 hours, we recommend a study time allocation of 2 – 4 hours per week which on average should see you complete in approximately 9 months.  There are no set deadlines, you study at your own pace.

What does the course cover?

The course explores skills development and embedded approaches to learning.  You will learn how to:-

  • Develop the skills that underpin literacy, language, numeracy and ICT and use them to help learners succeed in their studies.
  • Encourage the development of inclusive practices when addressing the literacy, language, numeracy and ICT needs of learners.
  • Raise awareness of the benefits of developing embedded approaches to teaching, learning and assessment of English, maths and ICT.
  • Provide signposts to useful materials which will support collaborative working with specialist teachers of literacy, language, numeracy and ICT in understanding how to integrate these skills within other areas of specialism.

The course comprises six units: –

  • Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training
  • Planning to Meet the Needs of Learners in Education and Training
  • Delivering Education and Training
  • Teaching in a Specialist Area
  • Using Resources for Education and Training
  • Developing, Using and Organising Resources in a Specialist Area

How will I be Assessed?

All assignments are completed online, and there are no set deadlines. You are free to study at your own pace and will be fully supported by your tutor.

You will be required to have access to 30 hours of teaching practice whilst on the course.  If you have completed any teaching in the past 12 months, we will be able to take this into consideration

You will be observed for a total of 3 hours during your course. This can be by one of your colleagues if they hold a PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent.

Course Completion

On successful completion of this course, the learner will achieve a UK recognised, fully accredited qualification/certificate – Level 4 Certificate in Education & Training (CET) (RQF)
